HARDCOVER BOOK PRINTING

At Book1One, we use the highest quality materials in our hardcover book printing process.

The covers on our hardcover books are made with 98 pt. binder's board that can then be covered with either a printed cover wrap, cloth or faux (imitation) leather material.

With this binding method, the text pages are first glued together at the spine to create a "text block." End leaves that hold the text block to the inside of the cover casing are applied to the binding edge of the text block. The cover is created separately and then glued to the end leaves and text block, creating a book that will last for years.

Preparing your hardcover book

Book1One works exclusively with PDF files. You can convert your documents to PDFs using your own PDF converter either online or as a print driver on your own computer. When converting to PDF, please maintain the "highest resolution" and make sure your fonts are embedded.

Pages:

Because of the binding process, we suggest allowing at least a ¾" margin on the binding edge of each page of your book and at least a ½" margin at the top, bottom and outside edges of each page. This process is called mirrored margins and will place your page content in a more "centered" position.

If you have any critical content including backgrounds or images proceeding to the edge of your pages, you will want to include an ⅛'' bleed on all four edges of your pages so no critical content is cut during binding.

Formatting Pages For Hardcover Book Printing

When setting up your PDF files, it is important to know that the first page of your PDF will be the first right-hand printed page of the book.

Cover:

Book1One offers three cover options for its hardcover books: a full color printed cover, a cloth covering, and a faux (imitation) leather covering, plus a dust jacket if you wish to create one. If your book is to have a printed cover, we have developed an interactive cover sizing diagram to help you correctly size your design. To download the diagram, click on the link below.

Printed covers have either gloss or matte film lamination which provide great protection, durability, and a beautiful appearance.

If you wish to have a dust jacket printed for your book, we have developed an interactive cover sizing diagram to help you correctly size your dust jacket. To download the dust jacket diagram, click on the link below. Dust jackets are gloss film laminated.

For either diagram, once you have downloaded, input the page trim sizes (height and width), page count and type of paper stock you wish to use. Page counts are based on 2-sided printing. If you are using 1-sided printing, you should double the page count amount.

Move your curser to any white space on the page and click. The diagram will then re-calculate and display the correct dimensions your cover or dust jacket design needs to be. We suggest you print out the diagram and use it as a guide when laying out your cover.

Please note that if you provide your front cover design, spine and back cover design to us in separate PDF files; we will assemble, for a $75 fee, your three files to create your hardcover or dust jacket.

Book1One offers four color choices in either the cloth or faux leather coverings: black, navy blue, dark red and green (see right side of this page), each of which can accommodate foil stamping in either silver or gold.

If your foil stamping involves basic text and numbers, such as book title, author’s name and a date, we can assemble your cover at no additional cost to you. Normally the title and full author’s name appear on the front cover and the title, author’s last name and year appear on the spine.

Simply upload a black and white PDF file with your desired foil stamping for the front cover. Then in the "Additional Instructions" box note exactly what you like to foil stamped on the spine and how you would like it oriented.

Foil stamping an insignia, symbol or custom font can be done for an additional charge and would be based on the size of the stamp.

I am a designer who has ordered several low-volume books for my clients from Book1One over the last few years and have been extremely pleased with the quality as well as the customer service. I have created both hard cover and soft cover books, and the website has useful templates for formatting the book layout so everything comes together seamlessly. I also love the instant quote generator on the website, it helps to see how the different options impact the pricing without having to go back and forth with an estimator or sales rep. I will definitely keep using Book1One!
