About Your Book

Regardless of your book size, there are some basic things that you will need to do in order for your book to turn out right.

1. Make sure that the page format of your file is created at the proper size.

Let's say that you want your final book size to be 5 ½ x 8 ½ in. portrait, in order to do this you must have the "Page Setup" in your source file set to that size. If the document were to be created at 8 ½ x 11 ½ in. instead, all the page breaks would be changed, or the text will be too small to easily read.

2.  If supplying a PDF file, make sure that the fonts are embedded.

Because of the sheer number of available fonts, there is the possibility that Book1One may not have the exact font that you are using. That is why it is essential that when you send your PDF file, you verify that the fonts are embedded within the document. If they are not, a reasonable font substitution will be made.  We recommend that you allow Book1One to generate your PDF for you in order to alleviate any problems.

3. Check that the pages have the proper margins.

In the binding process, the printed pages need to be trimmed on all 4 sides. If the correct allowances are not given for the margins, you may loose some text or it may become part of the spine.

4. Create a separate file for each component of your book.

Because no book is made up of text pages alone, it's necessary to supply individual files for the various steps of the process. For example, if you want a hard cover with cloth wrap you will need to give us a file for the text and a file for the artwork on the cover. Please see the chart to determine what is required.

5. Know how many black and white pages, and color pages are in your book.

Each printed surface is considered a page. So if a sheet of paper is printed on both sides, that is considered two pages (duplex). If there is only printing on one side (simplex) of the page, that is one page. And the same method applies to figuring out the number of color pages. If a sheet of paper has all text on one side and text with a color picture on the other, then that is considered one black and white page, and one color page.

**Please keep in mind that black and white pages are cheaper. Use our quick and easy calculator to see the difference for yourself.**

6. All artwork or photos should be at least 300 DPI (dots per inch).

In order to maintain the clarity of your images, make sure that they are least 300 DPI. A higher resolution is fine, but anything less that 300 DPI will appear blurred on the printed page.
